Stars Select Willie Reed with No. 1 Overall Pick

SALT LAKE CITY (October 20, 2018) – The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, selected veteran NBA center Willie Reed with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA G League Draft today. Additionally, the Stars selected guard/forward Justin Reyes with the 28th overall pick and forward James Demery with the 35th overall pick in the draft.

Reed (6-11, 245, St. Louis) owns three years of NBA experience, averaging 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in 12.4 minutes over 152 career games (12 starts) with Brooklyn, Miami, the LA Clippers and Detroit. An NBA G League All-Star and All-NBA G League First Team selection in 2015, Reed was twice named to the NBA G League All-Defensive Team (First Team in 2015 and Second Team in 2014). The Kansas City, Mo., native has tallied five double-doubles in his NBA career, including career-high marks of 22 points and 18 rebounds with Miami on Jan. 3, 2017, at Phoenix.

“I’m ready to get around the guys and get to work,” said Reed. “I want to be able to lead by example and work on becoming a leader, try to lead these guys and impart some of my wisdom that I’ve learned so far in coming from the G League to the NBA and now being back in the G League.”

Reyes (6-4, 205, St. Thomas Aquinas) played four seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas College, averaging 18.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.76 steals and 1.36 blocks in 26.7 minutes over 125 games (102 starts). The Haverhill, Mass., native, who shot 58.1 percent from the field in his collegiate career, averaged a career-best 22.2 points per game as a senior in 2017-18.

Demery (6-6, 200, St. Joseph’s) appeared in 117 games (73 starts) over four seasons with St. Joseph’s, averaging 11.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 27.3 minutes. An Atlantic-10 All-Conference Third Team selection as a senior in 2017-18, Demery averaged a career-high 16.9 points per game in his final collegiate season.

Every fall, 100-plus players are signed by the league office and placed in the NBA G League Draft pool, which includes NBA and NBA G League veterans, international pros and prospects, undrafted rookies and NBA G League National Tryout players. Players must be 18 years old to be eligible for the NBA G League Draft.

Salt Lake City Stars Training Camp begins Monday, Oct. 22, and the Stars will play one preseason contest on the road against the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario on Saturday, Oct. 27. The team opens the 2018-19 campaign away from home on Nov. 2 at Iowa, returning to Vivint Smart Home Arena for the home opener on Nov. 6 vs. Texas at 7 p.m. at the home of the Utah Jazz.
